Voice Test

To maintain a standard within the choir, a basic test will be applied to all potential members (candidates).
The musical director's decision to pass or fail a candidate is final.
The one-to-one voice test is a meeting between the musical director and candidate only.
The voice test is a two part test:
  1. A Tone Deaf Test.
  2. An Aural and Oral Test.
Candidates have to pass both parts of the voice test to be accepted as a singing member of the choir.

Part 1 - Tone Deaf Test

The musical director will play a single note on the piano/keyboard and the candidate will sing the same tone.
A candidate may have several attempts at the Tone Deaf Test.
The musical director will tell the candidate immediately if they have passed or failed the tone deaf test.
  1. Candidates who pass the Tone Deaf Test may proceed to Part 2 - Aural and Oral Test.
  2. Candidates who fail the Tone Deaf Test cannot proceed on to the Aural and Oral Test and will not be accepted as a singing member of the group.

Part 2 - Aural and Oral Test

The musical director will play on the piano a series of exercises designed to establish the candidate's musical aural and oral capabilities.
The candidate will respond verbally and vocally to the following exercises.
Sequence Test
The musical director will play a sequence of two (or more) notes and ask the candidate to sing the same sequence. This is designed to explore the intonation qualities of the candidate's voice.
Interval Test
The musical director will play two notes of different pitch and ask the candidate to sing one or both of the notes separately. This is designed to test the candidate's singing, aural and memory capabilities.
Chord Test
The musical director will play a triad chord (three notes together) and ask the candidate to sing one note out of the chord. This test may be repeated for each of the notes in the chord. This test is designed to establish the candidate's singing, musical listening and analysis capabilities.
Scale Test
The musical director will play a scale on the piano and ask the candidate to sing along to the scale then sing the scale unaccompanied. This test may be reproduced several times to establish the correct pitch for the candidate.  This test is designed to explore the overall range of the candidate's singing voice along with their intonation capabilities.
The musical director will tell the candidate immediately if they have passed or failed the Aural and Oral test.
  1. Candidates who pass the Aural and Oral Test will be accepted as a singing member of the group and assigned to a vocal section.
  2. Candidates who fail the Aural and Oral Test will not be accepted as a singing member of the group.
