Festival of Brass and Voice 2021 - 30th Oct - Royal Albert Hall London

Overview

The Incognito Singers have been invited again to take part in this event which has been running triennially for over thirty years.
The incognito Singers took park in the 2018 event and were based at an inner London hotel (Canary Wharf). We arranged our own flights to and from Spain, but once in London the event organisation supported us with coach transfers etc.
The event outline is:
  • Friday - flights to UK, transfer to London with night in hotel,
  • Saturday - transfer to morning rehearsal then back to hotel, transfer to evening performance and back to the hotel,
  • Sunday - transfer back to airport, flights to Spain.
The concert is approximately 1500 singers and two eminent UK brass bands lead previously by William Relton for a night of choral and brass band music.  It tends to have a last night of the proms feel to it all.  The concert is in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Organisation

Jack Travel is managing the UK based accommodation and transport requirements for this event.
David is currently liaising with the coordinators for our involvement.  Sally from choir is also helping with the logistics and administration.
Completing the attendance form and taking part means we accept their terms and conditions and use their travel and accommodation options.
It is suggested this time we opt for the London area hotel which has more flexibility, however it is probably based near Heathrow, however dinner is included in the package for Friday evening and breakfast each morning.
Additions we have to arrange are:
  • Transfer to and from Spanish airport (probably Alicante).
    • Singers and supporters associated with The Incognito Singers will probably travel out together however most may extend their stay in the UK to visit friends and family etc. Therefore a group booking is possible for the outward flight, but you may have to arrange your own return flight.
  • Food and drink on the day of the rehearsal and performance.
    • It is a full on day and time is limited for singers, plus there are restrictions about eating or drinking in the Royal Albert Hall auditorium.
    • The hotel may be able to offer room service, or last time offered us an out of hours snack upon our return from the rehearsal and performance.

Music

It is not yet confirmed who is conducting the performance.
The concert is performed by Male Voice Choirs (MVC) and Female Voice Choirs (FVC) plus brass bands.

The MVCs perform some pieces alone, the FVCs perform some pieces alone, the band perform some pieces alone. There are joint pieces. Also a joint piece in memory of those lost to cancer and this is when everyone in the auditorium including the singers and audience light their twinklers (pin on flashing badge) and the house lights are dimmed as we all sing - very moving!
The finale to the concert has a definite last night of the proms feel to it.

The music list is:
Female Voice Choir Pieces
A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square
Another Day
As Long As I Have Music
Hail Holy Queen
Male Voice Choir Pieces
Battle Hymn of the Republic
By Babylons Wave
Soldiers Chorus, Faust
When The Saints Go Marching In
Joint Choir Pieces
A Salute to Our Patron (National Anthem)
Finlandia
Gloria, Twelfth Mass, Mozart
Hallelujah Chorus, Messiah, Mozart
Land of Hope & Glory
Morte Criste
Rule Britannia
Twinkler piece - TBC
The joint brass bands also play some pieces.  There may be entertainment by other music groups at the start and interval.
David has most of the music available in PDF format with MP3 voice teach track and will be available to download from the Incognito Singers website. Some pieces are new and therefore will have to be sourced, prepared and distributed.

THE MUSIC HAS TO BE LEARNED AND COMMITTED TO MEMORY.
NO COPIES ARE ALLOWED AT THE PERFORMANCE.

Rehearsals

All UK based choirs are expected to attend each of the the district rehearsals and the main north/ south regional rehearsal. As an overseas choir we are exempt, however we have to rehearse if we commit to going. That means there will be extra music and extra rehearsals. It is a challenge trying to balance this music along with our normal repertoire but there will be some give and take.
The musical director of the event will visit us to lead us in a rehearsal. The previous incumbent was impressed with the effort we had put in to learning the music last time.
Ideally the local rehearsals will include a pianist rather than backing tracks, however this has yet to be arranged. Also a venue and schedule for rehearsal has yet to be arranged.

Costs

The cost is per person (Singer or Supporter):
  • Central London per singer/supporter = £260 (approx. €290) or single room = £375 (€420)
  • Outer London per singer/supporter = £220 (approx. €247) or single room = £285 (€319)*
It is a suggestion based on the poor availability of catering and refreshments last time, that we chose the outer London option this time.

Transfer from airport to hotel, hotel to Saturday morning rehearsal, hotel to Saturday evening performance and returns are included in the cost.

Dinner of the Friday night is included with Outer London option.

Breakfast each morning is included.

You may have to make your own arrangements (or a group arrangement could be made) for catering on Saturday afternoon and after the concert.

Last time we made our own way (car sharing) to Alicante Airport, but had a block booking of seats on the flight.

Some people took the advantage to stay on in UK afterwards in which case you make your own return flight booking.
